Roca Showroom-International Woman’s Day Event
A wee journey to Zaha’s designed showroom for ROCA on Friday morning for a debate by Women In Architecture. Reluctantly I went thinking it was going to be a burn the bra situation; I was pleasantly reassured and inspired at the event. Of course if one is honest deep down there might be a wee banner or purple and green sash hidden that one sometimes feel one wants to reveal. Instead one felt proud and reassured that as a woman you not only weren’t alone but also wanting to do architecture not because of our sex but because of the interest in it. It highlighted a fundamental issue that for some reason the young talented women that are presently coming out of University lack the confidence in their ability to forge forward in comparison to men leaving at the same time which seems remarkable in this day and age. Was surprising to see how little things change. I am hoping that there are many more events that will support us and women coming to the industry not as a group that is concerned about discrimination but who realize their worth and enable one another to fulfill it. A video was shown of images of women in Architecture and noticeably many were smiling and enjoying their work. To me we seem to be working so hard to prove ourselves and taking all so seriously we have forgotten to enjoy ourselves, in all our capacities and to celebrate our diversities both men and women and fundamentally as Architects.
