Old Home Super home programme is reassuring to all with regards to energy control and is within all our budget constraints. I was sceptical about some of the sustainable issues with regards to Victorian dwellings but after visiting a few houses on Saturday as part of the Eco House Weekend I am convinced we can keep the old!

Could you please elaborate on why we can keep the old? One of the issues with Victorian dwellings is that they are very draughty. What could be done with regards to heating and cooling?
Firstly we need to update our existing housing stock as isn’t a viable option to knock all our present stock down. In the Uk, homes account for around 30% of the country’s carbon emission and therefore is an issue that has to be dealt with.
Of course the easisiest way is to knock down and start again but we love our Victorians and demolition is often a cost issue.
Once we have decided to develop, we are suprisingly faced with very obvious architectural answers.
Insulation:
Internal Insulation where unable to change the external appearance means a slight reduction in wall thickness within the room area; but that and good windows would see a mark difference.
External insulation now comes in interesting forms like the Weber system with allowance for controlled openings for such items as ventaxias heat recovery units.
Heat Recovery:
Ventaxia have compact heat recovery units which are fantastic in Kitchens and Bathrooms.
Glazing:
Good windows with high insulation value and trickle vents built into frames. Existing windows to incorporate draught strips.
